Tintoretto's Painting in Korcula's Cathedral
12.06.06 - After a four years long restoration and research process, it is confirmed that the main altar painting in Korcula's cathedral Sveti Marko is indeed painted by famous venetian painter Jacopo Tintoretto. According to information announced by Katarina Kusijanovic of Hrvatski Restauratorski Zavod in Dubrovnik, the institution that was doing restoration and research about this painting since 2002, this magnificent work of art is indeed made by famous painter. After restoration of the painting and cleaning and removal of top layer of the painting, it was concluded the painting is work of Tintoretto. Additional archive researches of documents from late 16th century reviled interesting story about commissioning of this painting by Korcula's authorities. The painting will soon be displayed to public - first at exhibition " Painting by Jacopo Tintoretto from Korcula in light of new research" which will be hold in Dubrovnik from 07.07 - 28.07.06 in Knezev Dvor. Day after, on 29.07.06, at Korcula's patrons day of Sveti Todor, this valuable painting is traveling back home to Korcula, at main altar of Sveti Marko cathedral About Tintoretto:Tintoretto (real name Jacopo Robusti; 1518 - May 31, 1594) was one of the greatest painters of the Venetian school and probably the last great painter of Italian Renaissance. For his phenomenal energy in painting he was termed Il Furioso, and his dramatic use of perspectival space and special lighting effects make him a precursor of baroque art.
