According to the Spanish publishing house Editorial Libs Zagreb?s cathedral has been ranked among the one hundred most beautiful monuments in the world.
The book with a list and detailed description has been compiled by Spanish art historians with the aim of presenting to the public the most beautiful monuments in the world that should certainly be visited.
The aim of this project was not to make a sort of evaluation or classification of monuments, but rather to present a list of the most beautiful monuments, and the idea for the book was based on popular books such as the ?100 Wonders of the World? and the ?100 Great Wonders of the World?.

The book is to be released in September of 2007, at first for the Spanish market, and then for the other larger European and global markets. The same publishing house also plans to complete the 100 most beautiful places in the world project, for which a several Croatian destinations are also in the running. But more will be said of that program when it has been completed.
The history of the cathedral in Zagreb is quite a turbulent one.
It was erected in the transitory Romanesque-Gothic style in 1217, only to be razed almost to its foundations thirty years later by the Tartars. After its reconstruction, completed in 1287 in the Gothic style, the cathedral suffers the ravages of time and is again renovated in the 14th and 15th centuries.
In the 16th century it is fortified with walls and towers, and a century later it gets a massive Renaissance tower. It is again destroyed during this period, with the greatest blow coming in the shape of the earthquake of 1880 after which its complete reconstruction is undertaken, this time in the neo-Gothic style.

At the start of the 20th century Zagreb?s metropolitan church finally gets its current appearance with two slender towers, a high roof, new columns in the tabernacle and a new altar, and it is these days getting a new modern lighting design, ?signed? by world famous lighting expert Youri Agabekov who lit the Vatican and the Louvre in Paris.
