Can anyone recommend a good hotel in Zagreb that is reasonably priced?

Cheap - how cheap?
Hotels in  Zagreb are quite expensive , the cheapest would be www.hotel-central.hr and www.hup-zagreb.hr.

Perhaps you can consider hostel-type accomodation or private rooms?

Zagreb has lots of hotels but most are expensive.
only few hotels are cheaper there. u should check out from calculatemytrip.com

If there is no big event like e.g. the worldchampionship in Handball, hotels are normally avalible from around 300 kuna for a single room, which i think is quite ok.

Has anyone ever considered renting a little apartment while they're visiting zagreb instead of staying in a hotel? I'm not sure what the difference in price would be, but in my experience it's nicer to stay in a hotel or rented house (if you're travelling in a bigger group) and usually it's ended up being pretty cheap. For zagreb this is what I have found:

This site has a bit more pricey options, but they're super nice and central, and it also lists hotels and houses:
