I talked to friend of mine who regularly travels on that ferry from Split to Rijeka. She told me there is no official explanation about suspension, but people talk that government, who is subsidising this ferry line, actually run ot of money  :-\

With the current situation in relation to the state finances, I guess the have to save every where possible, and I am sure the make huge loses on several of the ferry routes in the winter half year.

I am sure ferries are run with loses, but instead to suspend ferries, why not introduce fares that are meaningfull, instead of peanuts. 25 or 30 kuna for one way from Hvar to Split is rediculous fare. at least 150 kuna one way is normal price.

I dont think there would be anybody on the ferries in that case, which would be tough for the the islands and turism.

Perhaps this ferry makes no profit in winter but this is important ferry line and we should keep it. Years ago this ferry stopped also in Zadar, not only in Split and timetable was better, we want this ferry back !!!!

In my opinion ferry tickets should be so cheap (subsidised) for people who live permanently on the islands. Tourists and visitors should pay market prices, not subsidised prices.

Look at this article: http://www.novilist.hr/2010/02/04/loncar-3A-katamaranske-linije-i-.aspx

I think letting the tourist pay, is not a smart way, from south of Germany to Split you already have cost of 123 (return) just for going on the roads, if you make ferry tickets more expensive, nobody will go on the island. Which would mean, that that State would have to subsidising the ferry routes even more.

I believe future of tourism and travelling in general is in public transport.

Therefore, the cost of roads for private cars is not something which I would consider as important in this context. There are trains and buses from Germany to Croatia, which one can use if can't pay for motorways.

30 or 25 kuna for one way for catamaran or ferry is price which is unsustainable in long run and I am looking foward for introduction of real, cost based fares for visitors and tourists.

Tourist were visiting islands long before these prices where introduced and will continue to visit I have no doubt about this.

I sure wish your where right on that one, but I do not see that happening within the next few years.

If the travel cost to Croatia (by car) keeps increasing, I think the only ?public transport? which will increase if the all inclusive flights to turkey.

Only time will tell.
Let's come back to this topic in few years time to see how tourism and travelling changed.
We may be surprised :)
