Rijeka The City Gets its First Hostel
Although the opening of Rijeka’s hostel had been announced for the fall of last year, difficulties in the construction works saw the gala opening delayed to February of this year when Rijeka, a city oriented more and more to young tourists, will get its first hostel.
The Rijeka Hostel will operate within the frame of the Croatian Youth Hostel Association, owner of hostels in Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Zadar, Pula, on the island of Lošinj and the towns of Krk and Punat on the island of Krk.
Rijeka’s hostel is fitted out in an old Austro-Hungarian villa located on Pecine, a part of Rijeka that has, over the past several years, because of the attractive entertainment offered there, become a favourite among Rijeka’s youth, and to young tourists, more and more often visiting this Kvarner-area city.
Besides this, the villa is about a kilometre and a half from the bus and rail stations and as far from Rijeka’s best known promenade -the Korzo, so that the new hostel’s location is more than suited to young travellers.
The old villa dates from 1898. Unexpected obstacles slowed extensive reconstruction work in the interior, so that the hostel was not opened on the initially announced date. Construction work now being completed, the hostel is not long off from its opening.
There is an entrance hall in the hostel’s lobby with a reception and cloakroom, a living room for guests, a kitchen and a 40-seat restaurant. The floors have a total of 14 sleeping rooms with each having its own washroom. The first and second floors have rooms with three to eight beds with the loft having three three-bed rooms. The hostel has a total of about sixty beds in rooms outfitted to the highest global
hostelling standards. The hostel is to be open year-round so that young tourists can socialise in the living room during colder weather, while the large summer terrace, with food and beverage facilities, will be open on hotter days.
There is also a large park around the hostel in which various attractive youth programs will be organised.
