Growth of Tourist Visits to Zagreb
According to the Central Bureau of Statistics of Croatia (Drzavni Zavod za Statistiku), in the first 11 months of 2006, Croatia was visited by more than 10 million tourists, which amounts to a total of some 52 million overnight stays.
Although these figures sound pretty high, they are similar to the same period of 2005, increased by about 3 to 4%.
The significant change in figures was achieved by tourist visits to Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, for which the figures show an increase of more than 9% in visits and 8% in overnight stays, compared to the same period in 2005.
It seems that Zagreb is becoming more popular as a weekend destination for European visitors, mostly due to newly introduced cheap flights to Zagreb by a variety of European low cost airlines.
