What is the best way to get to Plitvice Lakes National Park from Zagreb ?

We’re looking to go to Plitvice Lakes National Park for the day from Zagreb in May.

How easy is it to do by yourself on the bus?

Any idea of how frequently the buses run from Zagreb and back?

Also any ideas on how much it would cost?

    thx

Yes, take bus from Zagreb to Plitvice. There are lot of daily connections . I don’t this bus company does advance bookings via internet, but check for yourself at Zagreb bus station:

It is safe anywhere in Croatia to travel by bus ! As always, simply – do as locals do.

Somebody wisely also said : If you go on your own without taking the guided tours please make sure that you keep to the paths as the area was heavily mined and I am not sure that all the mined areas have been marked.

I would stick to the paths.

    Hi,

My sister and I are coming to Croatia in May and are booked on a 7-day sailing trip. We have some time before and want to explore some of the National parks- from Zagreb- Split. (As we arrive into Zagreb and our trip leaves from Split.) Which would you recommend? How accessible are they if we are using public transport?

Also, we need to get a ferry from Split to Athens on the 13/05/. Are there any that go straight there, or do we need to change somewhere?

    Thanks

    Sally

    Hi Sally,
    Welcome to find-croatia.com!
As you are flying to Zagreb, I would recommend you to use your spare time to visit Plitvice Lakes National Park: https://www.find-croatia.com/plitvice/
On your way to Split – by bus- stop at  Plitvice. Plitvice Lakes is a truly a magical place and you shouldn’t miss it.

Re your trip to Greece – There are no direct ferry services between Croatia and Greece, but the journey can be made via Italy, see info in this topic https://ferryspots.com/croatia-greece-ferry/

There are ferry services from Split to Ancona by Jadrolinija that also runs from Split via Dubrovnik to Bari. Book here: https://www.find-croatia.com/ferries-croatia/ferries-from-italy-to-croatia/

After you arrive in Italy, take a ferry to Greece.

You can also try hard way and travel by bus via Montenegro, Macedonia  or Albania to Greece. This is much harder but probably more interesting way.  ???

Thanks also for the transport info.

I think we will take the ferry to Ancona and then get a ferry to Athens.

the problem with the buses from Zagreb to Plitvice is in return.

Since Plitvice is not the usual stop, even though your ticket will say so, you will have to ask the driver to stop.

On the way back, you’ll have to stop the bus by waving and sometimes they might not see you. Good info is in this article.

You should also pay attention to using the same company both ways because it’s cheaper.
