Is booking a ferry essential ?

    We are visiting Croatia in August in a small vw camper van and hope to reach some of the islands from Zagreb; is booking essential or are you likely to be able to just turn up and drive on ?

    It would be nice to be able to just follow our noses and not be bound by a ferry appointment if we want to stay in one place longer than another.
