    Hi,

We are going to be in Croatia for 2 weeks in early October, flying into Dubrovnik and out of Pula. We are both nature lovers and would really love to see as much wildlife as possible. Does anyone have any advice for wildlife watching? In particular we would love to see birds of prey, chamois, bears (if they are still awake), wolves, lynx and otters (yeah, I know the last 4 are fairly difficult to see).

We are experienced hikers and ?stalkers?, we also dive and snorkel.

Unfortunately we only have 2 weeks so we aren’t going to be able to go to all of Croatia’s national parks so any advice on which best for wildlife would be great, along with any tips on spotting.

    Thanks heaps.

I suggest you to go to Lika and Gorski Kotar in places Gospic, Ogulin, Plitvicka Jezera or around that area.
Velebit mountain has also animals to see.

My suggestion is to contact these guys :

Velebitsko uto?i?te za mlade medvjede Kuterevo

    Pod crikvom 103

    53225 Kuterevo

    http://www.kuterevo-medvjedi.hr/

They run Brown Bear Sanctuary in Velebit and I beleive they can direct you to places and spots of your interest.

    BTW – “medvjedi” means “bears”

Brilliant advice! Any more advice, from anyone, would be greatly appreciated.

I am VERY excited about getting advice on finding bears, especially people who can give tips on what not to do (I know they have problems in the US and Canada with bears getting too habituated to humans, which in term endangers the bear- I would hate to have a negative impact on any wildlife). I looked at the photos in the gallery, they really are magnificent animals. Do you think it would be rude to ask if we can visit the sanctuary?

If you can make it to island Losinj then visit Losinj Dolphin Reserve http://www.blue-world.org/
They do day trips by boat for dolphin spotting.
They also have seaturtles : https://www.find-croatia.com/news-croatia/2006/seaturtle-caylpso.html

No it is not rude to ask, they must have visitors

Thanks so much to everyone who has replied. I have tried posting stuff in online forums before but have never had much luck butevery single one of you has had fantastic advice that is a perfect fit to what we want. It’s great to know there are lots of other ‘nature nuts’ out there.

I also can’t believe how easy this all looks. I almost fell off my chair when I saw where Losinj is- we were already planning to go to Cres to see the griffin vultures and it will be so easy to travel down to the try to see the turtles and dolphins. Croatia seems to be the animal sanctury capital of the world- it makes me want to move there. My partner (who prefers to see animals romping around in the wild, where they really belong) is really excited about going to the parks you have suggested.

Thanks again to everyone for all your advice, and if anyone has anything else to add, please do so.

Biokovo is interesting mountain to see all sorts of birds and animals. It is not too far from Kvarner , perhaps you can consider it. https://www.find-croatia.com/natureparks-croatia/biokovo.htm
It is easy to reach by bus from Makarska.
Another interesting areas is Vranjsko Jezero and  Kopacki Rit Nature parks.
Especially if you like bird watching.
Links and short intros you can find here: https://www.find-croatia.com/natureparks-croatia/index.htm
Vranjsko Jezero is on the coast, so not too far from Velebit and Losinj, Kopacki Rit is bit further up in Easter Slavonia, maybe it is too far for you to go if you have 2 weeks only.
Before you go contact peole in Parks and Sanctuaries to avoid possible dissapointments
Best wishes to you , I like to hear from people that are nature lovers  :-*
