Hi, I would like to travel from Split to Venice toward the end of June , need help with ferries and/or trains

Hi Marion, there are no any ferries that sail from Venice to Split.
Take ferry or bus from Split to Rijeka and then change in Rijeka for a bus to Trieste and Venice.

The cheapest solution should be >>>

    >>train from Budapest to Sarajevo >> train from Sarajevo to Mostar >> bus from Mostar to Dubrovnik

or bus from Sarajevo directly to Dubrovnik

    Hi Kerri,

    This is my idea:

    2 days in Split (www.find-croatia.com/split/) – do sighseeing + visit/day tip to Trogir (https://www.find-croatia.com/cities-croatia/trogir/)

2 days on Vis https://www.find-croatia.com/vis/ (remote island, nice beaches)

2 days Hvar Town https://www.find-croatia.com/islands-croatia/hvar/ (cool island, nice beaches)

2 days Korcula Town https://www.find-croatia.com/islands-croatia/korcula.html (great island & town, nice beaches)

3 days in Dubrovnik https://www.find-croatia.com/dubrovnik/ (include visit to Mljet – National Park) https://www.find-croatia.com/islands-croatia/mljet.html

    For ferries consult this site:

it has the the most comprehensive list of Croatian ferry ports and ferry timetables available on the web.

I’m planning a trip and have been wanting to go to Croatia. When I looked for ferries, I saw that there’s a direct one from Bari, Italy to Dubrovnik, but it says that this ferry does not run in April. Is this true, and if so, how should I go about getting to Dubrovnik?

    Hi Cynthia,

Bari to Dubrovnik ferry runs from March to November- the ferry schedule and booking engine is here :

    https://www.find-croatia.com/ferries-croatia/

How easy is it to buy a ticket and get a seat on the bus?
Are there stops on the way, to use the bathroom, for example?

It is easy to buy a ticket to Split – there are at least 15 buses a day that go there, you should be fine.
Yes, there are stops along the way – bus driver takes regular breaks for people to use bathroom, get refreshments etc..

I also saw that there is a ferry from Makarska to Sumartin at 12:30 and 5pm.  I don’t know how far/easy it is from Sumartin to Bol, but would this be a better option than going all the way to Split?

I wonder if it would be possible to hire a car to Dubrovnik to Bol (one way), so that I could drive from Sunartin to Bol…?

Well, you can always consider to take ferry from Makarska to Brac. Makarska is only 1 hour away from Split which is not huge difference.

Re car hire – I am not sure which company offers drop off in Brac – you can check various links here :

    https://www.find-croatia.com/car-rental/

Buses are very comfortable, air-conditioned and reliable,  I would suggest you to take bus and spend the time while travelling to look out through the window – landscape is really nice as bus is running along the coast

Where is the bus stop at Dubrovnik, for a bus to Split please?
Would the bus stop at Makarska on the way?

The bus stop in Dubrovnik is in Gruz https://www.dubrovnik-travel.net/gruz/
    next to ferry port: https://www.dubrovnik-travel.net/dubrovnik-ferry-terminal/

yes, all buses stop in Makarska

I am planning a two centre holiday, in Kolocep and Bol, in June 2012.  Would it be possible to travel by ferry, for example from Kolocep to Dubrovnik, to Hvar or Korkula, to Bol?  If I can’t do it all in one day, due to ferry times for example, would it be best to stay overnight in Hvar or Korkula?  I would prefer not to take the bus option from Dubrovnik to Split, then ferry to Bol.

In June, ferries from Dubrovnik towards north sails on Thursdays and Sundays only.

Ferries timetable from Dubrovnik to Mljet-Korcula-Hvar-Split is here:
    https://www.find-croatia.com/ferries-croatia/

Unfortunately, there is no other ferry in June that sails from Dubrovnik in this direction

If you can fit your sailing on these two days, you could then get fast ferry that sails from Jelsa (Hvar island) to Bol – see timetable on this link.

Also, check my post about travelling from Dubrovnik to Hvar where I addresses some issues:

    https://www.dubrovnik-travel.net/getting-from-hvar-to-dubrovnik/

    I hope this helps

Are all these places easily accessed? regular ferries in June?
how many days would you recommend we stay in Dubovnik and in Split out of our 2 weeks?

Ferries are regular in June, check ferry links: https://www.find-croatia.com/ferries-croatia/

Some timetables are not yet known for summer period but they will be same/similar as in earlier years.

I would recommend 2-3 days in Dubrovnik, 2 days in Split, that should be enough for sightseeing.

The rest of time try to spend on the islands

You will probably have to stay outside the town itself, as Dubrovnik has no compsites in the town. The nearest one is on Babin Kuk / Lapad (https://www.dubrovnik-travel.net/lapad/)
that site is very large and has lot of facilities…

Would you prefer to stay in smaller campsites and travel to Dubrovnik for sightseing?

I would like to book a airplane ticket from Split Airport which flies at 10am on Weds 28th July. But I am staying with some friends in Hvar and need to make sure that I am not going to make a nightmare for getting off the island that early. HOwever, I can’t find a timetable for the correct ferry. Or maybe I don’t understand the ones I have found correctly. Could someone please tell me what time the ferries from Hvar to split start on a weekday morning high season?

take this ferry from Hvar : https://www.find-croatia.com/ferries-croatia/lastovo-velaluka-hvar-split-ferry.php
and you will be in Split at the time to reach airport for 10h.

Ferry Rijeka – Split used to stop in Zadar, but was discontinued years ago.
No other ferry goes to Zadar from Rijeka. You would have to take bus.

We would like to stay on Hvar for 4 nights and make a day trip to Korcula rather spend 2 nights on each island.
But I can’t seem to find a way to make this work given the ferry schedules. Is this possible? Or would I have to stay on Korcula and make a day trip to Hvar? We’ll be in Dubrovnik before visiting the islands and Split afterwards.

Day trips from Korcula to Hvar are easily made with this ferry:
    https://www.korculainfo.com/ferries/catamaran-korcula.htm
I guess, starting from Dubrovnik, visit Korcula, stay in Korcula and make day trip to Hvar before proceeding with same ferry to Split. This would be the best I can recommend.

Hi Lulu, it depends in which part of Croatia are you travelling.
If you visit south ( near Dubrovnik) you can go and visit Pocitelj, Mostar and Sarajevo in Bosnia and Kotor, Budva, Sveti Stefan in Montenegro.
If you visit north bit around Istria, Italy is very near as well as Slovenia and Austria…
In two weeks you can visit a lot of places.

So far, some 300 companies and small business have been disconnected from the gas supply system and a further 600 can expect a similar fate over the next couple of days. According to reports from officials in the field, there have been no major incidents, but 30 consumers refused to allow inspectors to seal their gas metres, which will have repercussions in the form of fines as high as 500,000 kuna. On the other hand, due to restrictions, companies are threatening to lay off employees.

Shopping centres, malls left without heating
Due to restrictions in gas supply, a large number of shopping centres have been left without heating. The Shops and Stores Association with the Croatian Employers? Association stated that heating had been shut off at shopping centres Mandi, Avenue Mall and City Centre One, whereas there were only gas reductions at King?s Cross where they plan to switch to alternative heating sources. The Konzum chain store has switched off the gas supply in the majority of its small and large shops, and is considering alternative heating sources wherever possible, as reductions and cuts are causing serious problems for business and sales.

Wild camping is against the law in Croatia. You would need to camp in designated areas..
I am not aware about “free” places for camping…..

    Hi Aaron,
First I would say you will be fine as far as safety is concerned.i don’t think you need to worry about that,
I can not recomend you campsites as I dont know enough about them, i only visited few.
October is generally already out of season time so you might find some of the campsites already closed, so be prepared to take room somewhere instead of camping.
Also it might rain, so it can be annoying so I would suggest you if you can to make that tirp earlier like September if you can.
Regarding food, it will be plenty of supply nearby in shops where localc shop so you will be ok for that one too.
    Good luck

I have looked at the ferry and bus timetables but all the times seem to be too early and I am worried we won’t be able to get to Korcula at that time, any advice would be much appreciated!

If I’m wrong about most hotels being out a little please correct me! I’m looking for a  hotel with a swimming pool and gym though…

Yes, bus service is reliable and regular, updated timetables are at this site: libertasdubrovnik.hr and yes, most of the hotels are out of the Old Town. It is only 15-20 min bus trip to Old town from Lapad

What other way can we get from Hvar to Dubrovnik on 11 July, ie, could we take ferry to Split or Makarska and then get a bus??

Take anything that is available on the day to reach Croatian mainland, for example ferry from Sucuraj to Drvenik and then from there take bus to Dubrovnik. Buses on that route are frequent, you will not have trouble finding one.. Try no to go back to Split as this is further from Dubrovnik  then Drvenik or Makarska. Good luck

You can book a lot of journeys from there, but not ALL bus journeys in Croatia.

To go to Split, you can take train, but from Zagreb only, not from Plitvice.

Do we need to book this in advance or can we book this at Zagreb or when we arrive at Plitvice Lakes?

You won’t be able to book bus ticket to Plitvice or Split in advance.
Bus station in Plitvice is just a bus stop on the side of the road, so you have to stand there and wave to buses that go to Split.

Relations between the Government and Hvar are frayed after Hvar Mayor Pjerino Bebic claimed that the Government was preparing a new proposal where Hvar would not own shares but be given a tourist settlement instead.
Bebic said he refused to accept the exchange of shares in the hotel complex for real estate belonging to the Sirena tourist settlement.
Bebic is accusing the Government of intentionally going back on its promise to enable the Orca group majority ownership in a Hvar-based company.

Another boat that does cruisings around Kvarner is this one:
http://www.navstar-cruising.hr/English.htm – Cruising with vintage sailing ship along the magnificent Kvarner coastline & islands
Last year they had departures at Saturdays at 1 pm from Opatija/Krk/Rab/M.Losinj. I guess this will be similar for 2007.

Does anyone operate day (or overnight) boat trips cruising around Otok Cres, Otok Krk, and/or Otok Rab?  If so, from where do they leave?   Rijeka?  Labin?  Pula?  If you have any websites to suggest, I would appreciate any recommendations.

    Thank you.

Try to ask  here – http://www.deni-rab.com/ – they do something which might be of your interest
Also, this boat does some cruisings around Kvarner islands :  http://www.lovranac.hr/lovranac/eng/itinereri.asp that sounds pretty nice to me
    They start from Opatija

Look – article about the same tipic in today’s Times:

Ethnic cleansing gibe causes rift over war

The horrors of the Second World War returned to haunt Italy and Croatia yesterday, as the two nations traded insults in a worsening diplomatic row over the killing of thousands of Italians by Yugoslav Communist partisans.

The row follows remarks by President Napolitano at a remembrance ceremony last weekend in which the Italian head of state ? a former communist ? referred to the killings in 1943-45 as ?ethnic cleansing?.

President Mesic of Croatia responded by saying Mr Napolitano?s remarks smacked of ?open racism, historical revisionism and political revan-chism?. Yesterday Romano Prodi, the Italian Prime Minister, interrupted a trip to India to say he had contacted Zagreb ?to express our contempt for these absolutely unjustifiable words?. The killings took place as Yugoslav partisans drove out Italians from Istria and Dalmatia on the Adriatic coast.

The occupations formed part of a policy by Benito Mussolini, under which thousands of Croats and Slovenes were deported to concentration camps.

The revenge killing of Italians is known in Italy as the ?Foibe Murders?, from the term for the deep pits in which the partisans dumped victims. Italy wants Croatian EU membership talks to include compensation for Italian property losses in Istria and Dalmatia.

Travelling from Split to Sarajevo :

Are there any trains that go from Split to Sarajevo?
I checked trains timetables, but I get results for Split to Zagreb route only.

    Thank you for any suggestion

Hi Dales, welcome to our new forum!

No, there are no direct trains that run between Split and Sarajevo.

You can travel by bus to Sarajevo, or if you preffer to take a train, go to Ploce and take train to Sarajevo from there.
